How to prep your hair before your protective style!

Updated: Jul 1

Wearing braids and protective styles while vacationing or even through the months of extreme weather can be the most convenient choice when it comes to managing your hair. Unfortunately, some of us are not reaping the full benefits of the growth and protection that these styles have to offer. By effectively preparing your strands before putting them into a protective style, you will maximize your hair growth and retain more length. A few key things to remember before protective styling would include: to lock in your moisture, less tension is best, and keep your scalp clean through the duration of the style.

So what are we using at home and in the salon?

At DFW Beauty Studio Salon we offer services such as the Max +Hyrdration Steam treatment, which is perfect for protective styling preparation. Whenever you can't make it into the salon, solid products will get the job done. The Design Essentials Protective Style Maintenance Pack is what I would recommend. It includes the Oat Protein & Henna shampoo for cleansing, the Honey Creme shampoo for moisture retention, and the super moisturizing, stimulating Rosemary Mint conditioner. After you are thoroughly moisturized. All you'll need is an easy braid in or blowout to stretch the hair. This allows for manageability and comfort during the styling process. When your install is complete, enjoy up to 6-8 weeks of wake-up and go hair!!

Now that your hair is all tucked away, proper scalp care is imperative. Many people will go a month or two without shampooing. This will clog your pores and create a breeding ground for all types of scalp issues. Whenever you can't shampoo. I would recommend using a Scalp Detoxing Tonic like this one from Design Essentials. You can then follow up with a combination of oils or moisturizers to keep the scalp from drying out. Doing this will help manage the overall health of your scalp.
